I confess to having often been a bit snobbish about HRs Harleuins? Not for me I'd usually say Give me those authors like Lisa Kleypas Eloisa James Mary Balogh Caroline Linden etc who have never been published I believe by Mills and BoonHarleuinWell I've now done a 180 about this I guess Most non Harleuin authors have taken to pandering to the younger give me a bunch of sex and a silly story crowd of readers and have left me out in the cold There are still exceptions such as Meredith Duran Sherry Thomas Mimi Matthews Jayne Fresina but IMO you are welcome to the rest because I don't like to read themSo I'm grateful to GR friend Caz who just reviewed Lara Temple's soon to be released Sinful Sinclair #2 book very favorably I've pre ordered it based on that review and decided to read this one #1 of the series while waiting for the release of #2 I was wowed This is a Harleuin HR and the author is very very goodWhat does this HR have going for it? 1 Excellently drawn complex characters 2 Intelligent snappy dialogue 3 Less predictable plot than most HRs 4 The best romance and relationship development I've read in ages 5 Just the right amount of sex to seal the love deal without wasting pages and being annoyingly explicitOur heroine is Miss Olivia Silverdale a rich heiress from Gillingham who has moved to London with her aunt and her nurse both to escape the scandal surrounding her recent broken engagement and to investigate the death of her beloved godfather Henry Payton who died scandalously in the bed of a prostitute Olivia cannot believe her godfather would have betrayed his wife in this way and in addition she blames herself for his death since the circumstances surrounding her scandal were the reason Henry had been working in London instead of in GillinghamWhile investigating Olivia uncovers a connection between her godfather and Howard Sinclair another man who had died scandalously She makes contact with Lucas Sinclair Howard's son and heir who is now the Earl Sinclair thinking he would want to collaborate with her to find out the truth about both deathsWell that doesn't uite work out the way she had expected Lucas is cynical and bitter about the past and wants to leave it buried with his father But just wait my friends Watch Lucas become intrigued by Olivia At first suspicious that she is either trying to trap him into marriage or wants to blackmail him he finally sees her for what she is A force of nature to be reckoned with A list making truth seeking knight Sir Olive a Dare Better to join her and keep her in line than leave her on her ownThe plot is good It is also well developed and entertaining and doesn't have contrivances and stupid behavior especially on the part of the heroine who is an admirable female The characters are the best I've read in perhaps a year or so of attempting to find an HR to my taste And the love between H and h develops beautifully and organically There is physical attraction early on but it's a slow burn to the actual sexual intimacy which doesn't happen until close to the three uarters mark That's the way I like itTemple doesn't need scenes with descriptions of body parts fitting into other body parts to show us the sexual nature of the relationship of these two For example there is one very hot scene in which the two are visiting a museum and wander into a room with a series of marble statues Olivia is fascinated by the beauty of these reliefs and feels the need to touch them which she does It's perhaps the sexiest scene in the book and the poor hero is almost unmanned You are a menace Miss Silverdale Lucas said without turning You told me to touch it she repliedI said touch it not make love to the blasted thingThis story has all the romance that's been lacking in all those clinical love stories I've been reading It's warm and fuzzy and sexy and gave me all the feels I want in a romance It has a hero who is extremely attracted to the heroine but who wonder of wonders is able to control his libido You can see that these two will do very well in their future not just in bed but out of it That's not always a given in many romancesThis is almost a 5 star book for me Why not 5? Well it's darned close to that but there was a little snafumisunderstanding near the end that I found unnecessary It was resolved in a beautiful way but still Maybe I'm being too picky?

I've given this a B at AAR so that's 45 starsLara Temple one of the strongest on the current roster of HarleuinMills Boon Historical authors begins her new  Sinful Sinclairs  series with The Earl’s Irresistible Challenge the first of three stories about siblings whose irresponsible ne’er do well forebears have tarnished the family name and put a blemish on the reputation of the younger generation  It’s a terrific read that hooked me in right from the start as our sarcastic world weary hero comes up against a different kind of heroine who won’t let him – or his conscience –off the hookThe eldest of the siblings is Lucas Lord Sinclair Chase and Samantha are his younger brother and sister and he is rather wondering at his lack of sense for turning up to a clandestine meeting at a dingy church on a rainy winter’s afternoon simply because he’d received a letter suggesting that the sender has information relating to the death of Lucas’ father  Lucas wonders even when the young woman he meets Miss Olivia Silverdale explains that she has travelled to London from her home in Yorkshire in order to uncover the truth about the recent death of her godfather Henry Payton and during the course of her enuiries came across a note in Payton’s hand that said “Howard Sinclair was terribly wronged and something must be done”Lucas listens to Miss Silverdale’s recitation with growing incredulity and shock as she explains how she has recruited the help of a Madam by masuerading as a spiritualist and becomes and convinced he’s dealing with a madwoman or a very creative liar  He gives little credence to either the note or Miss Silverdale’s suggestion that they join forces to obtain answers to the truth about her godfather’s death and the uestion posed by his words concerning Lucas’ father – but ends their unorthodox encounter by telling her that he will think about what she has told himTwo days later Lucas has come to decision and tells Olivia that he won’t allow her to make enuiries which could embroil his family name in scandal than is already attached to it making it clear that he will put a stop to her investigation if she will not desist  Yet he finds it impossible to completely dismiss the bright intriguing and infuriating young woman whose uick mind and ready wit attract and annoy him in eual measure  Rather against his better judgement he decides that “If anyone is to continue tarnishing our name I prefer the remaining Sinclairs do it ourselves”  and finds himself agreeing to ‘allow’ her investigation to continue provided she agrees not to do anything further without informing him in advance of her plansOlivia Silverdale isn’t the slightest bit intimidated by Lord Sinclair’s veiled threats although his sardonic disparaging attitude toward her attempts to help him and his family exasperate her no end  She is surprised at his lack of interest in unravelling the mystery suggested by Payton’s note but determined to pursue her own enuiries with or without his help  Henry Payton was of a father to her and her siblings than their own father who spent most of his life abroad pursuing his interest in the natural sciences and the story she’s been told – that Henry died in the bed of a courtesan – doesn’t add upLucas is intrigued and exasperated by Olivia from the very start and it doesn’t take long for him to become well and truly smitten  She’s like no woman he’s ever met – which is a well worn romance novel cliché most of the time but not here because Olivia is a refreshingly different heroine  She’s independent and certainly pushes her boundaries but she doesn’t do it in that obtrusive ‘look at me’ way that so often characterises those curl tossing TSTL heroines I can’t stand  She’s unconventional and Lucas is right when he calls her relentless but she’s uietly so; she doesn’t make a fuss she just makes it clear she’ll do what she believes she must with or without Lucas’ help or sanction but not in a brash or snide way  He knows full well his strings are being pulled but there’s no uestion he does what he does because he wants to The time he spends with Olivia the harder it is for him to step back and his protests become token as he falls and deeply in love with her  The main conflict in the novel arises from the fact that Olivia doesn’t actually realise the extent of her tunnel vision or how her determination to do what she perceives as The Right Thing is actually manipulative  Lucas sees it and even goes along with it telling himself it’s because he wants to stop her from further besmirching the Sinclair name whereas we know it’s because he’s falling hard for her and because he wants to protect her from gossip and the disappointment he fears is in storeLucas’ self deprecating humour and self awareness are very attractive and I always enjoy watching the confident worldly hero losing his head over his heroine especially when as is the case here he’s the first to own to the truth and depth of his feelings  Olivia’s realisation that she’s fallen in love is uite matter of fact whereas Lucas struggles to reconcile his instinct to do the honourable thing and keep Olivia at a distance so as not to taint her reputation by association while being so in love with her that he just can’t stay away  Olivia on the other hand is inscrutable  She has had years of practice at hiding her feelings which causes Lucas to doubt she feels anything for him than physical attractionThe Earl’s Irresistible Challenge is a beautifully developed wholly absorbing romance featuring two strongly drawn protagonists who are clearly made for each other  Lara Temple once again demonstrates her gift for humorous insightful dialogue – Olivia can than hold her own against Lucas’ sardonic wit while he knows exactly which buttons to push in order to get a reaction – and I lapped up each of their witty astute conversations and observations  It’s a very strong start to a new series and I’m looking forward to spending time with the  Sinful Sinclairs

I received this book by Rachel's Random Resources blog tour in exchange for an honest review thank you so much to Rachel and Lara for giving me the opportunity to read and review The Earl's Irresistible Challenge This is the first time I read a book by Lara Temple and it won't be my last time I will read a book by her I absolutely love and enjoy The Earl's Irresistible Challenge so much and it made me realize how much I miss reading historical romance books so much I won't go into any details about this book because I don't want to be too a spoiler I will just tell you about what I love so much about The Earl's Irresistible Challenge Which I love absolutely everything in this amazing book the plotline was really well developed and very refreshing I so missed reading about this era in books at the beginning of The Earl's Irresistible Challenge was a slow start for me to read but then the pages I read the I couldn't put this book down The Characters are all amazingly well developed as well I absolutely loved that all the characters in this book had their flaws and were not perfect characters that you can see that they all had troubles in their lives and marriages etc The writing style and dialogue was very descriptive and expressive it also flows really well and you understand everything within the book Of course my favorite characters are the main characters Lucas Sinclair and Olivia Silverdale these two totally completes each other and both of them are very attracted to each other when the first met under the troubling circumstances that the met each other But the hot attraction was there for the both of them even if they were not exactly wanted to voice there attraction until much late on in the story both Lucas and Olivia tried to fight their attraction to each other But they Lucas and Olivia spend time with each other they their attraction and feelings grow especially for Olivia And that's what I absolutely love in this book that their feelings and attraction grow in time in The Earl's Irresistible Challenge I think Lucas and Olivia are the perfect match for each other the both of them complete each other in every way and they both needed each other as well All and all I absolutely loved and enjoyed everything in The Earl's Irresistible Challenge if you love historical romance with some steamy scenes in the book then I say please do pick it up I think you will love this book as well I can't wait to continue to read about the Sinclairs siblings especially Chase Sinclairs who I absolutely loved reading in this book

Well what can say about this? Fantastic wonderful sexy charming entertaining engaging in other words absolutely bloody brilliant What a fabulous start to what is set to be another fantastic series by one of my whole time favourite authors The Sinful Sinclairs as anyone who has been avidly reading Ms Temples books will know are a sort of follow on from the previous series; Wild Lords and Innocent Ladies as the hugely seductive Sinclairs are the cousins of none other than the those Wild Lords – I am not going to tell you which one you will have to read that series to find out 😉 I knew that I would be in for a treat and yet again I was blown away by Ms Temple’s splendid writingThe story opens when Lucas; Lord Sinclair receives a mysterious message from a Miss Olivia Silverdale once meeting the young veiled lady in a church in the middle of the night he hears her out – which believe me with how Olivia tells stories is a very long night for Lucas which does leave with eual amount or headache and earache He is in disbelieve over what the slightly odd young woman has told him she wants to restore the tainted reputation of her godfather and amidst her own investigation she has come across mention of Lucas’ own late father How is the late Lord Sinclair connected to Olivia’s godfather? You’ll have to read to find out anyway Lucas is sceptical at her claims and wants nothing to do with her or her infernal investigation which does include the hilarious outing of an occultist by the name of Madam Bulgari – she is a real hoot and I would love to invite her to any party But Lucas is curious then after voicing his thoughts to his brother; Chase – my goodness another gorgeous brother – he soon finds himself intrigued not just by her fanciful story but also by her she gets under his skin and now the notorious rake with the sinful reputation may just have found his match in the form of the eccentric young Yorkshire lass with the mesmerizing eyesMy goodness I have found my whole new favourite heroine in the form of Olivia she is pure brilliance – yes I maybe a tad biased with her being a fellow Yorkshire Lass but she really is fabulous She is eccentric talkative creative imaginative stubborn and a bit set in her ways – have I just described myself there? She has a way of seeing people it’s like she can see past the façade and see what others can’t she is holding a painful secret one which Lucas instantly picks up on that and I love how when they kiss he doesn’t rush her he is solid but gentle and so patientAs I mentioned the kissing my oh my those kisses They are hot sensual steamy and loving that first kiss is a whopper full of nervous lust and it made me melt Lucas is such a passionate tender man – huge heart eyes for him especially this line ‘he wasn’t accustomed to rebellion either from his libido or his conscience’ Love itLucas is a mystery I love how Temple hints at a past; brief glimpses into the man behind the Sinful mask she does a great job at dropping breadcrumbs for the reader to follow throughout the story He is very family orientated protective controlled blunt out spoken brutally honest at times grouchy and a tad brooding – can you see why I am a wee but smitten? He is definitely the leader of the wolf pack – or should that be the Sinclair pack? And for a man who claims to be in complete control he has an awful lot of randy thoughts that really have no place at tea 😉Did I mention Chase? If there ever was a case for the hashtag; Double Swoon now would be a time I know that this book is all about the marvellous Lucas and Olivia but I just have to mention Chase; I am completely smitten and intrigued by this man on first impression he’s laid back witty mysterious he makes you sit up and pay attention and he has some great one liners Lara Temple what are you doing to me?Overall The Earls Irresistible Challenge is sexy witty entertaining great plot brilliantly written Ms Temple has created a mesmerizing and hugely enjoyable love story with two of the most seductive and entertaining couples that you will ever come across and which entwines an edge of your seat mystery This is hugely romantic there is no doubt about that the chemistry sizzles between them and it has some great comedic moments the conversations between them is brilliant fast witty; they have razor sharp minds and some of the best dialogue that bounces between themAbsolutely brilliant I cannot wait to see where this series is going to goThis was an Arc copy via the author in exchange for an honest review Thank you Lara

First in a new series called The Sinful Sinclairs the three books are planned to focus on the three Sinclair siblings Lucas Lord Sinclair comes first And to be honest I wasn’t at all sure why he was called Lord Sinful; though the heroine Olivia is spooked by him at first it seems to be because of a reputation that isn’t that different to any other lord in London Lord Sinclair doesn’t prey on virgins or the defenceless; his mistresses are experienced and know exactly what they’re getting into Yes it seems his grandfather and uncle blackened the family name and his father’s death in a duel under mysterious circumstances did nothing to help but really Lucas’s a sweetheart which Olivia eventually discoversIt’s a good thing too because Olivia needs his help In today’s society it’s hard to comprehend just how devastating to an entire family a scandal could be and how far reaching the conseuences of what seems like a simple decision Olivia’s decision not to marry a man she discovers fully intends to continue his affair with one of her married friends has left her a pariah and her godfather’s death in shocking circumstances is the last straw When she discovers not all about the death is what it seems and may somehow be linked to the death of the late Lord Sinclair she’s determined to investigate and enlists Lucas’s helpOlivia’s delightful uniuely intelligent and determined and OCD I loved her Wall of Contemplation and Lucas is fascinated despite his initial determination not to have anything to do with her Watching him get drawn helplessly in like a moth to a flame is pretty funny especially since Olivia really has no desire to attract his attention at least not at first By the time she realizes her own feelings Lucas is already accepting of his fate which is a pleasant change in Regencies Too often it’s the heroine who does all the piningThis was both a thoroughly enjoyable romance and a sobering look at the effects a scandal could have on reputations in the era both individual and that of an entire family I hope to read the rest of this series soon; Lucas’s brother and sister both deserve their own happy endings Five stars for a fantastic readDisclaimer I received a copy of this book for review from the author

45 starsOlivia Silverdale is in London not to catch a husband as her chaperon thinks but to solve a mystery She is convinced her guardian's death is not as it appears and that his name has been smeared and while researching she has uncovered information that may clear the name of another man that was unjustly vilified Howard Sinclair She hopes by contacting his family she will not only help them but will learn new information about Henry's death She summons there really is no other word for it Lucas the Earl of Sinclair to meet her in a dark church and in hindsight wonders if that was the best choice Olivia tells Lucas what she needs and he is dismissive She didn't expect him to be so annoying or to not believe her he actually accuses her of trying to trap him He tells her he will think about what she has said and let her know what he decidesTwo days pass before he contacts her he meets her at another church and tells her he will not help her and further he forbids her to investigate anything relating to his father She tells him she will do what she likes and leaves in a huff Lucas should be glad to be done with her but he is strangely drawn to her She isn't telling him everything and he convinces himself that is why he changes his mindWhat follows is a wonderful story of two flawed people falling in love uncovering secrets and making peace with the pastThis was a well written delightful story with very likable characters amusing banter warmish love scenes secrets betrayal misunderstandings and finally a sigh worthy ending There were a couple of things that felt important but were never explained like her brother Jack and there were a couple of incorrect formal address issues but nothing that detracted from the storyI am voluntarily leaving a review of an eARC that was provided to me

Absolutely fantastic Brilliantly written in a language that takes you to the exact time and setting of the novel These days historical romance novels are littered with modern phrasing current issues and situations woven into the plot and anachronistic terms This is not true for The Earl's Irresistible Challenge Miss Temple has me thinking believing this was written many centuries ago with her admirable linguistic style Her skillful use of vocabulary and rhythm drew the characters and locations so vividly they come aliveOlivia and Lucas are fully fleshed out and likable characters whose slow burn love story is utterly believable They are evenly matched and have wonderful chemistry The mystery is a great device to keep them connected and in constant proximity with each other which led to their fall into love I also like the minor characters They're individualized and supported the main characters really well I especially love Chase Sinclair and I'm so excited to read his story next
